The Tallow Guide
101 Level
Tallow is rendered bovine fat, used for centuries in balms, soaps, and candles. Its molecular structure closely resembles the oils naturally found in human skin, which allows it to absorb beautifully without sitting heavily on the surface.
Traditional lotions are water-based, which means they often contain preservatives, alcohols, and stabilizers to maintain texture and shelf life. Tallow balm is oil-based and naturally stable, allowing for extremely simple formulations with only a few ingredients.
Rendering bovine fat is a sustainable, eco-friendly practice: it makes use of fat that would otherwise go to waste, and avoids the heavy industrial processing most large-scale lotion producers use.
Depends on who's making it. Our tallow is painstakingly rendered in small-batches, and hand-whipped until it's always fluffy, never greasy.
Our proprietary process removes all scent from the tallow, allowing our clients to enjoy a completely unscented product, or select one of our exclusive scents developed in house at our apothecary.
We focus on traditional ingredients, exacting standards of quality, and beautiful design — skincare that looks good on your skin, and on your shelf.
Our tallow is 100% rendered bovine fat produced in small batches by our apothecary team in house: no third parties, synthetic fillers, or artificial additions... ever.
Grad level
Tallow contains a high concentration of fatty acids that are very similar to those found in the skin’s natural protective barrier, including oleic acid, palmitic acid, and stearic acid.
Because these lipids are already present in human skin, the skin recognizes them and is able to absorb and utilize them easily.
This is why tallow often feels deeply moisturizing and supportive of the skin barrier rather than simply sitting on the surface.
The skin barrier is the outermost layer of the skin that protects against moisture loss, irritation, and environmental stress. When the skin barrier is healthy, skin feels soft, calm, and hydrated. When it is damaged, skin can become dry, sensitive, or inflamed.
Skincare that supports the skin barrier focuses on replenishing lipids and preventing moisture loss rather than simply adding temporary hydration.
In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Tallow is naturally shelf stable and does not require refrigeration. Temperature change may cause the balm to soften or firm slightly, which is completely normal and does not affect the quality of the product.
